Test the whole port window, not just the boat time
As checked October 29, 2026, Alaska Tales describes a 4½-hour combination starting and ending at the downtown cruise terminal, with 45 minutes at Mendenhall and two hours on the boat. That is one operator’s example, not the schedule of every combination or a promise about the existing Viator cards.
Illustrative planning arithmetic: assume 7½ hours from permission to leave the ship to all-aboard, 30 minutes to reach the meeting point and check in, and a 60-minute return margin. Subtracting the 4½-hour tour leaves 1½ hours unallocated: 7½ − ½ − 1 − 4½ = 1½ hours.
The port window, meeting allowance and return margin are assumptions, not a sailing timetable or recommended minimum buffers. Replace them with your ship and operator’s instructions, including any tender or berth transfer. Do not add the operator’s included transit twice. A positive remainder is not confirmation that the departure fits.
If 45 minutes is too short for your glacier priority, choose a glacier-focused day instead. If the real pickup-to-return schedule leaves too little margin, choose one activity or stay downtown rather than squeezing in both. Confirm current operations and the exact departure before buying.
